Infiniti’s G37 convertible is, in a word, athletic. From its throaty exhaust note to its brawny, 325-horsepower engine, the G37 exudes muscle. The convertible G is new for the 2009 model year and embodies the rock solid driving dynamics Infinity owners have come to expect. The convertible mechanism is so well integrated into the G37’s shrink wrapped shell that you almost don’t notice the seams in the C-pillar. “We’ve had people standing right beside the car with the top up, say, ‘Got any convertibles?’” says Patrick Langley, a Kelly Infiniti sales consultant.
STYLING: The Infiniti G-series has always benefited from timeless design. Our G37 convertible tester came in a classic silver color that Infiniti calls “liquid platinum.” Contrasted with graphite leather interior surfaces, the G37 convertible is a sweet-looking package. Infiniti has taken care to give the G37 distinctive sheet metal that blends well, with top up or down. Inside, the convertible has such luxury flourishes as African rosewood door and center-stack accents, a 13 - speaker sound system (with noise-canceling technology), and an air filtration system that senses when the cabin needs to be cleansed. The back seat is snug, and, with the top down, cargo room is scarce.
DRIVING IMPRESSIONS: The G37’s suspension is tuned for spirited driving. A Sport version with 6-speed manual transmission is available for serious driving enthusiasts. The 3.7 liter V-6 engine packs a wallop. Mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission, power delivery to the rear wheels is silky smooth.
BOTTOM LINE: Loaded with goodies, the G37’s sticker can creep north of $50,000. But serious car lovers will still see value in a drop-top that’s likely to age well inside and out, while helping them stay forever young.
